Braces / Orthodontics
If you have crowded/crooked teeth or upper and lower jaws that do not meet properly, then braces or other forms of orthodontic treatment can help. Although crooked teeth are often seen as merely a cosmetic issue, straightening them can actually help dental health by reducing the risk of various oral health problems, such as:
- tooth decay
- tooth loss
- abnormal wear to tooth enamel
- gum disease
- affected speech and/or chewing
- jaw problems
There are different methods used to straighten teeth, including traditional braces and removable aligners. They work by applying pressure to gradually move teeth into the proper alignement. The orthodontic treatment you receive will depend upon the options provided by your dentist/orthodontist according to the severity of your case and your personal preference.
The length of treatment plans vary according to the situation, though one to three years is the average for most people. Typically, a period of wearing a retainer follows, in order to hold teeth in their new positions until they are fully settled. These days, braces are more comfortable than before, and newer materials apply a constant but gentle force to teeth and tend to require fewer adjustments.
